Liverpool’s Liver Building on fire shortly after firework seen striking building

It is unclear what caused the fire but the Liverpool Echo report it began on one of the balconies as crowds gathered to celebrate Liverpool FC winning the Premier League and that fireworks were seen striking the building. Liverpool Football Club, Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council and Mayor Joe Anderson have urged crowds to leave the area with Mr Anderson considering a curfew. A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “We were alerted to a small fire on a patch of astroturf.

“Firefighters have dealt with the incident and the fire is now out.”

Mr Anderson told the Echo: “We are becoming increasingly concerned about the situation in the city centre after thousands of fans gathered together again to celebrate Liverpool’s Premier League win.

“People are drinking and causing problems and we just want to make sure that everyone stays safe.

“Large gatherings like these are still not something the city needs as coronavirus continues to be a real risk for us here.”

On the idea of a curfew, he added: “I have spoke to the chief constable of Merseyside Police and he is also concerned about the situation.

“We are asking people to go home and he has assured me that silver command are ready to respond to the situation and are currently monitoring it.

“Tomorrow we will look again at what we can do to make sure people are kept safe and this doesn’t keep happening.

“Maybe a curfew could be put in place as police powers have already been upped in the city to deal with anti-social behaviour.”
