Los Angeles mother charged with killing her two daughters is seen in court three years after murders

A double child murder case that has baffled Los Angeles police, prosecutors and the accused’s family for three years, finally came to court Tuesday.

Jasmine Hickman, 30, was seen walking naked – and covered in white powder – along a south LA street at night, holding her one-month-old baby and hand-in-hand with her seven-year-old daughter, shortly before both children were killed, police say.

Hickman was charged with murdering the infant Kamille and her older sister Jaliya and she was scheduled to be arraigned and enter guilty or not guilty pleas at LA criminal court.

But her attorney, public defender Robin Ginsburg, asked Judge Sergio Tapia to postpone the arraignment for two months.

Hickman – who was led into court in downtown LA by a Sheriff’s deputy with her hands cuffed behind her back and wearing a yellow top with ‘LA County Jail’ written on the back – said ‘Yes’ when Judge Tapia asked her if she agreed to waive her right to be arraigned.

The judge rescheduled her arraignment to January 20, 2021.

And after Tuesday’s hearing, when asked why it’s taking so long for the arraignment, Ginsburg told DailyMail.com: ‘It’s a very sensitive and serious case and I don’t want to comment.’

Cops still don’t know exactly what happened that night on October 19, 2017.

They do know that Hickman was captured by the security camera of a liquor store in south LA, carrying little Kamille and leading Jaliya by the hand. All three had no clothes on.

And all three were sprinkled with a strange white powder.

Detectives also know that a short while after they were captured on video, Hickman was caught behind a nearby market with both daughters. One was already dead. The other was dying.

But what took place that night, what horrible events that led this troubled young woman to snap and allegedly take the lives of her own children, remains a mystery.

After a month-long investigation, police charged her with double homicide, accusing her of ‘assault by force.’

Investigators have not offered an explanation of what the white powder was, why it was all over Jasmine and her kids, or if it had anything to do with this terrible tragedy.

Jasmine’s heartbroken family were as puzzled as the police about what could have made her commit this horrific alleged crime.

‘It’s hard for me to grasp why she would do this,’ Jasmine’s uncle, Darren Hickman, told NBC’s LA affiliate a few months after the children’s deaths.

Darren and wife Barbara adopted Jasmine before the was 10 when she was orphaned, and, said Barbara, ‘She had a lot of issues, you know, a lot of anger also because she was dealt a bad hand.’

The couple – who have six children off their own – hoped that being with a big loving family would help Jasmine work out her problems.

‘We didn’t have much money, but we had a lot of love,’ Darren Hickman said in the TV interview.

When Jasmine gave birth to Jaliya, she was loving, but struggled with the responsibilities of being a mom, the Hickmans remembered.

Jasmine grew up, moved out, found an apartment of her own, trained to be a cosmetologist, and eventually wound up working at a Ralphs supermarket in downtown LA.

When Kamille was born she stayed with Jasmine. The child’s father also spent time with them, though their relationship was strained, the Hickmans said.

Just prior to the nightmare, Jasmine spent the weekend with the Hickmans.

What he did the next day concerned Barbara Hickman.

‘She just said, ”God said my time was up, and to say my goodbyes to Jaliya.”’

Barbara was so worried that she called the Department of Children and Family Services, and later the police after she learned that Jasmine had taken Jaliya out of school.

Three days later, on October 19, she and Darren woke to the horrific news of the mother and her two children found behind the market.

‘She needs to be evaluated, because I know something happened to her,’ Darren told NBC.

‘Things just trigger her,’ added Barbara. ‘If she would have come and talked with me, even with the baby, if it was too much….she could have left the baby with me.’

At the time of that interview, the Hickmans had not tried to visit Jasmine in jail.

‘I forgive Jasmine. I have to forgive Jasmine,’ said Barbara.

‘But I don’t really right now want to talk to Jasmine. Because what are we really going to talk about?’
