FRESH talks on restoring Northern Ireland’s devolved government will be held following the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

Leaders on both sides of the border agreed her death should be the inspiration to end a 15-month power-sharing logjam.

Yesterday’s announcement comes after the priest at Lyra’s funeral received a standing ovation for asking why it took her shooting to unite politicians.

Theresa May and Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar said in a joint statement that by attending the service they had recognised “the clear will and determination of all of the people of these islands to reject violence and to support peace and a better future for everyone in Northern Ireland”.

They added: “We also heard the unmistakable message that people across Northern Ireland want to see a new momentum for political progress.”

They said talks will start after next week’s local elections. The Stormont government collapsed in January 2017 after rows between the DUP and Sinn Fein.

Lyra, 29, was killed by republican terrorists during rioting in Londonderry last week.

Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley said in Belfast: “Lyra symbolised the new Northern Ireland and her tragic death cannot be in vain.”
