M1 closed after ‘drunk’ man with a BROKEN LEG is seen waving at traffic on the ground

Police, paramedics and the fire service were called to the scene in the early hours of this morning at Junction 8 for Hemel Hempstead, according to eye witnesses.

The ‘blonde’ man was seen flat on his back on the hard shoulder, waving one arm in the air as cars zoomed past.

Emergency services were called at around 11.53pm and the stretch of the road going Northbound was closed until 1am as the man was recovered.

An eyewitness told the Daily Star Online: ‘I could not believe what I had seen. I was driving past and I just saw this person on the floor.

‘He was there on the floor with an arm in the air, just waving at cars.

‘I called it in straight away and was later told he was drunk and had broken his leg. I can’t work out for the life of me how he got to where he was.

’He must have walked there – but from where I just don’t know.’

The road was closed off for safety reasons and cars were seen ‘reversing’ on the motorway.

The incident was later confirmed by police who were called to the scene.

A police spokesman said: ‘Police were called to junction 8 of the M1 to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man who had reportedly fallen over on the hard shoulder.

‘The road was briefly closed and the male was transferred to St Mary’s Hospital, London, with a suspected broken leg.’
