Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney backs Harry Maguire transfer and insists ‘he’d be a good signing if they can get him’

WAYNE ROONEY has backed Manchester United’s pursuit of Harry Maguire and claimed the Leicester star would “a good signing” for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjer is set to meet Ed Woodward today ahead of a final push for the England centre-back.

Negotiations between the two sides have dragged on for weeks as Leicester are sticking to their £80million valuation of Maguire, 26.

But Old Trafford legend Rooney, 33, thinks that if United managed to push the deal over the line, it would be a good piece of business by Red Devils chiefs.

He told ESPN FC: “I think Harry’s a good player and over the last few years he’s improved as a player.

“He’s gotten better, and he’s been a main player for Leicester City, but also for England.

“I think he’d be a good signing if they can get him.”

Maguire missed Leicester training two days ago for the second time this summer, although it was reportedly due to illness.

United are ready to agree a fee with the Foxes as Ole Gunner Solskjaer is even more desperate to sign a new defender following Eric Bailly’s knee op.

The Ivorian was stretchered off with an injury in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham and will be out until the new year.

But United, who have pursued Maguire throughout the summer, will almost certainly have to finally meet Leicester’s asking price.

That would be a world-record fee for a defender – topping the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk.
