And Torrent said: “I’m sure Wayne will become a good coach because the last conversations I’ve had with him were about that.”

Rooney, who now plays for DC United, took the chance to quiz Torrent when they played in the Open Cup this month.

The United legend clearly admires the work which has been done by the Spaniards at City.

Torrent, who worked with Guardiola for 11 years, said: “He’s interested in becoming a coach and he can be a top coach in the Premier League.

“If he can, it’s good news because he’s a legend in the Premier League and football around the world.

“It’s important these players stay in the game.

“I love this guy, I’m a supporter of Manchester City and he’s United but for me he’s a good guy.”

Rooney turns 34 this year and says he has had offers from the US and England to become a manager.

He said: “There’s an opportunity for me to go straight into management.

“When I do hang up my boots, that decision will be made on what the ambition of the club is and what my own ambitions are.

“I’m taking steps to get my coaching badges but I just want to enjoy playing.”
