Manchester City close to £6m signing of 18-year-old Filip Stevanovic from Partizan Belgrade… with highly-rated winger to go out on loan in January or stay with Serbian side for the rest of the season

  • Filip Stevanovic has impressed in two years in the Partizan Belgrade first-team
  • The Serbian winger looks set to join Manchester City for a fee in region of £6m
  • The 18-year-old was also linked with Manchester United throughout the summer

Manchester City are on the verge of signing 18-year-old Filip Stevanovic from Partizan Belgrade for a fee in the region of £6million.

The highly-rated winger made his debut for the Serbian side at the age of 16 and has been linked with a host of top European clubs in recent months, including Manchester United.

But Premier League runners-up City seem to have won the race for the Serbia Under-21 international, who will either go out on loan in January or stay with Partizan for the rest of the 2020-21 season.

Stevanovic has made 53 appearances for the Partizan first-team and has scored 12 goals.

His first goal came in Champions League qualifying in August 2019, becoming the club’s youngest scorer in Europe and second-youngest in the club’s history at 16 years and 311 days old.

Partizan boss Andrea Stanojevic admitted last month that the club would find it difficult to hold on to the 18-year-old starlet.

‘I would like Stevanović to stay until the age of 23, but it will be difficult for him to welcome the next birthday at Partizan as things currently stand,’ he said.

Meanwhile, City duo Kevin De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte have handed Pep Guardiola a major boost by returning to training ahead of the game against West Ham on Saturday.

Midfielder De Bruyne sat out City’s last two wins against Arsenal and Porto due to muscle fatigue, while defender Laporte also missed the fixtures during the last week with a minor issue.

However, both took part in a light training session on Thursday,  although as stated by Sportsmail on Wednesday the Premier League clash against the Hammers may come too soon for the pair.

De Bruyne recently bemoaned his heavy workload, revealing that his ‘body is screaming out for a rest but nobody listens to the players,’ before then leaving the Belgium camp following their 2-1 defeat by England during the latest international break.

The latest news will nevertheless provide Guardiola with some positive injury news after further blows on Wednesday evening in their 3-1 victory against Porto in their opening fixture of this season’s Champions League.

Centre back Nathan Ake – who has with Eric Garcia covered in Laporte’s absence – suffered a groin injury in the hours before the win against the Portuguese side.

Midfielder Fernandinho was forced off with a muscle problem only five minutes after coming on as a substitute, with Guardiola later claiming he could be out for as long as six weeks.
