Manchester United trigger Paul Pogba's 12-month contract extension to tie star down until 2022

Manchester United trigger 12-month extension in Paul Pogba’s £290,000-a-week deal to stop Frenchman talking to clubs abroad in January… just weeks after he admitted it is his ‘dream’ to play for Real Madrid

  • Manchester United have triggered the extension in star Paul Pogba’s contract
  • The French midfielder’s deal had been due to run out at the end of this season
  • United had decided to activate the clause weeks ago, Sportsmail understands
  • The move now prevents Pogba from leaving on a free or talking to foreign clubs

Manchester United have activated the 12-month extension in Paul Pogba’s contract, tying their record £89million signing to the club until June 2022.

Pogba’s £290,000-a-week deal was due to run out at the end of the season but United made the decision to trigger the clause several weeks ago, as reported by Sportsmail last month.

It means Pogba cannot leave as a free agent next summer or talk to foreign clubs in January, having once again described the prospect of playing for Real Madrid as ‘a dream’ last week.

The comment raised more questions over his future at Old Trafford, but at least United have the reassurance of knowing their investment in the 27-year-old midfielder is protected.

‘Paul’s our player,’ said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. ‘He’s going to be here for another two years and I’m sure he’s focused on doing his best for us.

‘We want to see the best of Paul and I’m sure in the next couple of years we’ll get the best out of him.’
