Matt Hancock insisted the coronavirus infection R rate is below one in all regions as he schooled Sky News host Kay Burley for her assessment of the science. She questioned his announcement after Public Health England has said the infection rate is above one in northwest England. Ms Burley asked the minister: “The R rate hovering above one in the northwest, who are we protecting ourselves from?”
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Hancock said: “No, that’s not right actually, Kay.
“The R rate is below one in all regions according to the latest science.”
The host interjected: “Since when? PHE said it was above one, when did that change?”
Mr Hancock continued: “That’s more than one of 10 models that are used and the overall assessment of the science shows it’s below one.

“The thing about the science, Kay, is you have to look at all the information you have and that’s the best way to study the science.”
However, the Health Secretary did not clarify if he was speaking about England or the entire United Kingdom.
