The western half of the UK has been issued a yellow weather warning by the Met Office. The warning is in place from 4pm on Wednesday until 9am on Friday. Further weather warnings have also been issued for later this week.

From 12pm on Friday, most of the UK is also under a yellow thunderstorm warning.

The warning expires at 6am on Saturday.

For the warning issued on Wednesday, the Met Office state: “Thunderstorms may develop across parts of western UK late on Thursday afternoon and into the evening.

“A larger area of thunderstorms is then expected to move northeastwards overnight into Friday.

“Many places will miss the worst of the storms but where they do occur torrential downpours could bring 30-40 mm rain in less than two hours. Lightning and hail are also likely to be additional hazards.”

This is a breaking story with updates to follow.
