A SICK couple have pleaded guilty to forcing an autistic relative to eat her mother’s ashes while keeping her in an outdoor cage.

Married pair Terry Knope, 46, and Raylaine Knope, 43, took responsibility for the woman, now 22, at their Louisiana home after her mother died in 2015.

They then subjected her to an appalling catalogue of abuse which included beatings, burnings, and the withholding of food when she failed to complete household chores quickly enough.

The victim was drenched with a bucket of human waste and shot with a BB gun, according to court documents.

On one occasion, she was hit in the head with a wood board, causing her to bleed.

It was feared abuse would be suspected if she were taken to a doctor, so instead the wound was closed with glue.

When she was found she was malnourished, covered in insect bites, and living in a 6-by-8 foot chicken-wire outdoor cage.

Further charges included hate crime and the theft of almost $9,000 (£7,000) in disability payments from the victim.

The couple now face up to 28 years each behind bars.

Raylaine Knope also admitted forcing the victim to make sexual advances towards male visitors to the property.

The original indictment accused the pair of sex trafficking but was watered down under the plea deal.

In it, prosecutors claimed: “The plan of the conspiracy was for the co-conspirators to subject (the victim) to physical violence, threats of physical violence, psychological and verbal abuse, abuse of legal process and psychological manipulation to obtain uncompensated labor and services from (the victim)”.

The abuse is thought to have begun the day after the victim’s mother died and continued for roughly 10 months.

The couple were first arrested, along with their three adult children, in July 2016.

Bridget Lambert, 22, and Jody Lambert, 24, the daughter and son of Raylaine Knope, have both pleaded guilty to federal charges of having participated in the abuse and are awaiting sentencing.

Taylor Knope, 21, the daughter of Terry Knope, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges still pending against her.

Terry Knope also pleaded guilty to having concealed that others on the property were manufacturing methamphetamine.

His daughter has alleged that as a child she was herself subjected to abuse and made to cook and consume methamphetamine on a daily basis.
