Multiple Yankees employees test positive for coronavirus

Four members of the Yankees organization in Tampa, Fla., have tested positive for the coronavirus, several people with knowledge of the situation told The Post.

Two members work at George M. Steinbrenner Field and two have ties to the nearby minor league complex. The members were not identified by name or exact job descriptions, nor was it known when they were tested.

The two connected to George M. Steinbrenner Field are non-players and one of the two at the minor league complex is a staff member who hasn’t been around the Yankees’ facility for a while.

The job description of the other person connected to the minor league facility is not known.

The Yankees administered tests on Friday in Tampa, so there is a chance the number of positive results will increase. The Yankees had two minor league players test positive for the virus in March, which led to the minor league camp being shut down.

MLB shut down spring training in March because of the virus.

The Yankees have been holding informal workouts for big league players three days a week at Steinbrenner Field, but those workouts ended Friday due to several big league teams receiving positive test results for COVID-19. MLB subsequently ordered facilities to be closed for workouts and undergo a thorough cleaning process.

The Phillies had eight people test positive in Clearwater, Fla., and the Blue Jays closed their spring training facility on Friday in nearby Dunedin when a player displayed symptoms associated with COVID-19. The Rangers and Giants, who have spring training facilities in Arizona, closed them this week.

N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday the Yankees and Mets will train at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, respectively, if spring training occurs, this after the Yankees a day earlier were discussing a possible move due to a spike in Florida cases.

Florida saw 4,000 new cases surface Friday, a record single-day increase for the state.

With owners and players still deciding what a season would look like in terms of games played and start date, MLB isn’t expected to reveal when spring training will begin until after the sides agree to a deal or commissioner Rob Manfred implements a schedule.

It’s possible the Yankees use Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for their “taxi squad’’ players (30 early on) during spring training and the place where they would work out if a season gets underway. SWB is the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, 98 miles from New York City by car.
