A BABY born four months early, weighing just 13-ounces stuns doctors with his remarkable fight for survival.
Ellonn Smartt, 25, from Des Moines, Iowa, was rushed to hospital for an emergency C-section after her waters broke.
Despite doctors telling Ellonn and her partner Jordan Morrow, 25, that their son probably wouldn’t survive, baby Jaden has defied the odds.
Speaking to Today, Ellonn said: “They said I was going to have to deliver in the next day or two and there was a good chance he wouldn’t survive.
“That was the moment when I fell apart. I was heartbroken.”
Born the same size as his dad’s hand, just a ninth of the size of the average male baby weight – Jaden’s parents said they were heartbroken by the news that he might not make it.
Professionals at the Iowa Methodist Medical Centre said that babies born that early are often not fully formed, do not have the full use of their limbs and are not able to breathe unassisted.
But Jaden came out “swinging his arm and screaming at the top of his lungs”, according KCCI.
He also took to breast milk immediately, doctors calling this ‘remarkable’.
They said I was going to have to deliver in the next day or two and there was a good chance he wouldn’t survive. That was the moment when I fell apart. I was heartbroken.
Proud mum Ellonn told Today: “His arms and toes were moving and he was trying to breathe on his own.
“He’s our little miracle.
The couple haven’t been able to hold their son yet bu they visit him every day as he lies in an incubator.
They hope that he will continue to gain strength and will be home by his official due date on November 6.
Ellonn told KCCI: “I go in and talk to him, and I tell him that I’m proud of him every day.
Taking to Facebook to share her son’s journey, she wrote how he had “14 bloody transfusions in the first week of his life”, and she admitted that “some days have been a struggle”.

Since his birth, he’s had a small infection, but overall doctors say he’s doing well, according to Today.
Ellonn, who also has a three-year-old son, Elijah, has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for his medical bills.
On the site she wrote: “I’ve heard them use terms like “amazing” and “remarkable” to describe me so far – not bad for someone under 1 pound, huh?
Jaden continues to fight at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.
