Mum shares her foolproof three-step process for deep cleaning her washing machine for white laundry

A Melbourne mum has shared her foolproof three-step process for deep cleaning her washing machine.

The woman, who goes by Mama Mila online, said cleaning out your washing machine will mean you’ll end up with whiter, brighter laundry, and while you might think it’s a big chore it doesn’t take that long and should be completed monthly.

‘The first thing you need to do is empty out the drain pump and clean the filters,’ Mila said in a TikTok video on the subject.

You can do this by removing the filter and running it under the tap, all the while scrubbing at it gently with a toothbrush.

‘Next, detach the trays that you put the washing powder and then wash them with dish soap,’ Mila said.

You can do this in the sink or just in the washing machine with a wet cloth covered in dishwashing liquid.

How to clean your washing machine

1. Empty out the drain pump and clean the filters. You can do this by removing the filter and running it under the tap, gently brushing it with a toothbrush.

2. Detach the trays that you put the washing powder and then wash them with dish soap.

3. Spray the inside of the washing machine and wipe the seals with a homemade solution of white vinegar and five drops of tea tree oil.

4. Add a cup of white vinegar into the dispenser and run your machine on empty at the hottest setting.

Hundreds who saw the post said they would try Mila’s trick at home, with many saying it was a good reminder as they haven’t cleaned their washing machine in a ‘long time’.

‘I think we’re all guilty of it,’ Mila responded.

‘It’s so important for both your clothes and your machine.’

What is the five-step method for spar-worthy towels?

1. Set the washing machine to 40-60 degrees Celsius.

2. Add the towels to the washing machine, along with liquid detergent and half a cup of plain, white vinegar.

3. Do the washing cycle.

4. Shake the towels when they come out and let them air-dry to practically dry.

5. Give them a few minutes in the tumble dryer to make them completely dry. This will help with softness, fluffiness and absorbency.

‘Level up your self care routine with spa-worthy towels,’ Mila posted on TikTok.

‘This is the secret to getting fresh, fluffy towels at home.’

According to Mila, the first thing you need to do is set your washing machine to between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius.

Throw your towels in and add liquid detergent as well as half a cup of plain, white vinegar instead of fabric softener.

‘Do the wash as normal, shake the towels and let them air dry when they come out until nearly dry,’ Mila said.

‘Then, tumble dry them for just a few minutes until completely dry. This will help with softness and absorbency,’ she said.

The reason why vinegar works so well instead of fabric softener is that it ‘breaks down the residue from detergents leaving the towels soft and fresh’.

A two-litre bottle of plain, white vinegar typically costs around $1.20 from the supermarket.
