Kickboxing champ Sergey Karpenko was found dead sparking a murder mystery investigation.
Karpenko’s body was discovered on a river quay on the Mokya river in the centre of the city of St Petersburg in Russia.
Mokya River is a small river in Russia that encircles the central portion of Saint Petersburg making it an island.
Local police believe the 51-year-old was murdered and have launched an official investigation into the kickboxer’s death.
Sergey Konovalov, a friend of Karpenko’s, told local media the star was a good man, stressing if the deceased had enemies, they were not from the sporting world.
He said: “We are all brothers here.”
Karpenko leaves behind five children, one of whom has said his father had disappeared a week ago.
Police have not suggested a motive for the crime, and the investigation is ongoing with no arrests made.
The athlete won championships in Germany in the 1990s and coached young fighter after his retirement.
Karpenko won the CIS championship in 1991.
In 1992 he became the campion of Russia and the armed forces, and in 1993 the professional athlete because a finalist of the European championship in kickboxing.
