Nancy Pelosi launches attack on salon owner as she faces backlash for flouting rules

US Republicans criticised House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday for going to a hair salon in San Francisco in an apparent violation of the city’s coronavirus pandemic regulations, but the Democratic leader said she had been told by the salon the appointment was allowed. Ms Pelosi has since hit out at the salon owner and claimed the appointment was a “set up”. She added that the salon owner owes her an apology.

In a press conference, Ms Peosi said: “I take responsibility for trusting the word of a neighbourhood salon that I’ve been to over the years many times.

“When they said, ‘we’re able to accommodate one person at a time, and we can set it up at that time’, I trusted that.

“As it turns out, it was a set up. So I take responsibility for falling for a set up.”

She added later on: “I think the salon owes me an apology”, and addressing the reason she didn’t wear a mask, she said: “I’d just had my hair washed. I don’t wear a face mask when washing my hair. Do you?

“I always have a mask. For me, for the people I’m encountering, but also for my family. But I don’t wear it when getting my hair washed.”

Under strict rules to combat the coronavirus pandemic, hair salons in San Francisco were still prohibited from admitting customers on Monday, when Ms Pelosi had her appointment, although salons elsewhere in the state and across much of the country were already open.

Salon owner Erica Kious told Fox News she was informed by a hairdresser, who rents a chair at her salon, that Pelosi’s assistant had approached her for an appointment.

She said: “I was like, ‘are you kidding me right now? Do I let this happen? What do I do?’

She said: “The hard part of all this is that I have been in that community for 12 years, and since this happened I have received nothing but hate text messages, death threats. They’re going to burn my hair salon down, my Yelp page is just unbelievable with bad reviews.”

US President Donald Trump also weighed into the backlash as he said his administration would “send Nancy packing”.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: “Crazy Nancy Pelosi is being decimated for having a beauty parlour opened, when all others are closed, and for not wearing a Mask – despite constantly lecturing everyone else.

“We will almost certainly take back the House, and send Nancy packing!”

Mr Trump and other Republicans got hold of a brief video of Pelosi’s appointment, which first aired on the Fox News channel, to accuse Pelosi, the most senior elected Democrat in Washington, of hypocrisy.
