Electric car charging infrastructure is regularly looked to as one of the sticking points for why the mass adoption of electric cars has not got any closer, quicker. The problem is that there are not enough charging points for all or the majority of British driers to make the switch to an EV yet despite numbers of charger soaring over the past few years. While the on-the-go fast and rapid chargers and destination chargers have increased the big problem is for motorists that don’t have off-road parking. Electric car charging points can be installed into homes which have a driveway but those without or in apartment blocks, for example, face a problem.

There have been some suggestions for ideas which could help to address this which include lamppost chargers, which have been installed in areas of London, and pavement-based chargers.

One problem with the is the electric charging points would litter every street, where required, which could actually impact pedestrians.

One company has developed a potential solution to this particular issue with retractable points.

British firm Urban Electric has designed chargers which pop-up from the pavement when needed and retract back into it when they aren’t required, reports GreenCarReports.

The plan for the firm is to introduce these points onto residential streets and in public car parks.

The company has received $4 million pounds (about $5 million) to install 18 pop-up hubs in two demonstration projects, in Plymouth, England, and Dundee, Scotland

“More than 7.5 million UK drivers park their cars on-street at night,” said Urban Electric co-founder Olivier Freeling-Wilkinson.

“However, their cars are located right above the low voltage network, and by accessing this safely and without causing street clutter our charging solution provides the convenience of at-home charging that every EV driver wants, but until now was unable to have.”
