The newborn girl – who still had her umbilical cord attached – was discovered in a plastic bag on June 6 in a wooded area in Georgia, US.

A sheriff has since released the dramatic body-cam footage in the hope of finding the hours-old baby’s mum.

The video shows local man Alan Ragatz telling the sheriff that he had heard the baby’s cries from his house nearby.

He said: “My kids heard it, they said ‘it’s a baby’ but I said ‘no, it’s just an animal’.”

Alan’s three teenage daughters heard the sound before alerting their parents.

Despite initially being sceptical the family ventured into the woods with torch lights.

As he looks down at the child he adds: “Oh look at this precious thing.”

The camera then shot the moment the officer ripped the plastic bag all the way open, revealing the crying newborn.

They then wrapped the baby in a blanket in a bid to keep her warm.

A voice sounding from the officer’s walky-talky adds: “Try and comfort her.”

The local man is heard saying to the child: “Look how precious you are, look who’s here.”

“She’s a sweetheart, she’s a sweetheart.”

A medic begins to tend to the child, who appears to be covered in blood and faeces.

Once the girl was taken to the hospital, she was soon named India by hospital workers.

“We are happy to report that Baby India is thriving and is in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Tuesday accompanying the video.

Officials are asking the public to share any knowledge of a woman in the late stages of pregnancy who may have given birth to the baby.

“We release this footage in hopes to receive credible information on the identity of Baby India and to show how important it is to find closure in this case,” the sheriff’s office said.

If anyone knows a woman who was in the late stages of pregnancy and may have given birth to this infant, please contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office at 770-781-3087.
