Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has called on Sadiq Khan to take down the protections covering the Winston Churchill memorial.
As the statue sits within the GLA, it is officially under the remit of the Mayor of London.
Mr Dowden told the daily briefing that he was “hopeful” that the Labour politician would remove the boarding.
He added: “I think it’s particularly important this should happen given that President Macron will be visiting shortly.
“He’s to mark that famous address from de Gaulle.
“To have Churchill covered up at that point would not be a great look.
“I think the Mayor appreciates that.”
