Workers also said they were forbidden from sending children to the naughty step.

Managers said it makes children feel “labelled”.

Instead, staff have been advised to use “positive reinforcement” and explain to kids why their actions are wrong. But the news has been slammed by traditional education campaigners.

Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “Those who are against the naughty step need to be put on it themselves.

“Children need to be taught that their actions have consequences. Children want to know the difference between right and wrong, and the naughty step is a part of that.”

But others claim words such as “naughty” can prompt children to see themselves in a negative light.

Sue Learner, editor of daynurseries.co.uk, said: “It can become self-perpetuating and lead to more bad behaviour.”
