Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given his blessing for Mason Greenwood to rejoin the England squad after the Manchester United manager held clear-the-air talks with Gareth Southgate.
Solskjaer was left fuming after Greenwood was picked for England’s first squad of the season which later saw the teenager being sent home after breaching Covid-19 protocol rules alongside Phil Foden.
He was then left out of England’s three internationals in October but should be named in Southgate’s squad named on Thursday to face the Republic of Ireland, Iceland and Belgium.

Solskjaer went public with his criticism of England after the incident which saw 19-year-old Greenwood punished for inviting women back to the team hotel after a game in Iceland – he claimed United had asked he wasn’t selected because United had only finished the previous season four weeks previously in the Europa League.
But the Norwegian struck a more conciliatory tone ahead of Greenwood’s expected comeback.
‘It’s Gareth’s decision who he wants in his team and I had a very good conversation with him before the last squad get-together,’ said Solskjaer.
Solskjaer said England boss Gareth Southgate is free to pick any of his players for squads
‘I don’t want to interfere, it’s his decision who he picks of course, and if he wants to pick any of my players they are available.
‘I’m full of admiration for the way Gareth is managing the England squad and I think he has done a fantastic job. I’ll leave him to focus on his job and me on mine.’
Greenwood scored his second goal of the season against Leipzig on Wednesday night and could start against Arsenal.

He and Foden were effectively given a one-squad ban by Southgate even though he did include Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho who breached The Government’s Rule of Six – but not whilst on England duty.
In September, Solskjaer said Greenwood should not have been picked for the double-header in Iceland and Denmark given United’s domestic 2019/20 had over-run to the middle of August.
‘The kid had a fantastic season and I tried my best to give him a rest over the summer,’ said Solskjaer. ‘The club asked specifically (England) – we pointed out he should have had a rest. He needed it mentally and physically after that season he had.’
