Outlander fans were very surprised after Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) had sex with Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James) in season three. Jamie slept with Geneva while working as an indentured servant at the Helwater Estate in England. But what led Jamie to stray from his beloved wife Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe)?
Why did Jamie Fraser really sleep with Geneva Dunsany in Outlander?

Jamie was left in between a rock and a hard place after he was blackmailed by Geneva into sleeping with her.
She threatened to reveal he was a Jacobite to her mother, which could have landed him in big trouble.
Geneva was due to be wed to a man many years older than her and decided she wanted to lose her virginity to Jamie rather than her husband-to-be.
Jamie reluctantly obliged to her demands and fulfilled her wishes, resulting in Geneva falling pregnant with his child.

Speaking about why Jamie went through with the agreement, Outlander writer Toni Graphia said: “His heart fully belongs to Claire, but he does it.
“And we gave her a little bit of spirit, a little bit of life force because this is going to be the mother of Jamie’s child.”
She went on to say: “In a crazy way, you know when they come out of this the other side of this, she’s given him a very unexpected gift.”
Adding: “He never expected to have another child and suddenly he has a son.

Graphia said: “Without crushing [Geneva], almost like a teacher, he says, ‘This isn’t what love is. You can do this with any man, but love is when two people connect within their souls not in their bodies.’
“There again, Claire is present all around. Even when he’s making love with another woman, his mind and his heart are with Claire and always will be. So, this a really moving moment.”
Tragically, Geneva died in childbirth and her sister Isobel Dunsany (Tanya Reynolds) along with her husband Lord John Grey (David Berry) raised the boy as their own.
The storyline saw Jamie spending some time at Helwater as his son Willie grew up, allowing him in some capacity to be a father albeit at a distance.

Actor Heughan also shared his thoughts about the storyline on the season three DVD, saying: “He obviously has always wanted to be a father and have a huge family and losing Faith in season two, and then losing Brianna in a sense has left a big gap in his life.”
This plot point was a big moment for Jamie who seemed to suffer loss after loss in season three, leaving him broken and hollow.
Another big moment in season three was his ill-fated relationship with Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson), whom he married after much prompting from his sister Jenny Murray (Laura Donnelly).
Jamie was eager to raise Laoghaire’s children and have the chance to be a father – something he was very much denied with Claire and their child as well as with Willie.
