If you own an Amazon Echo you’re probably well aware of some of the things you can ask it.

Setting timers, checking the weather, turning on lights and playing your favourite music are some of the most popular actions but there’s plenty more these smart speakers can do.

Perhaps one of the best extra features, that could come in handy from this weekend, includes being able to check up on all the latest football news.

Via Alexa’s Football Fixtures Skill, owners can simply ask questions such as “Alexa, ask Football Fixtures who Leeds United are playing next” or “Alexa, ask Football Fixtures to give me the last Liverpool score”.

Along with that footballing skill, there’s plenty more useful extras which could come in handy and here’s our pick of the best things to ask Alexa.

Alexa, how is the traffic to Gatwick airport?”
To receive locally relevant results, make sure to set up your location in the Alexa app. Go to the Devices icon in the bottom right hand corner > Echo & Alexa > select your Echo device > add your address under Device Location.

Alexa, play pop music to make me happy.”

Alexa, turn up the bass.”
Personalise the qualities of your music by adjusting the bass, mid-range and treble for your compatible Echo devices. To control these settings from your Alexa app, tap the Devices icon in the bottom right corner, select your Echo device, then Sounds > Equaliser.

Alexa, when’s the next Grand Prix?”

Alexa, sing a nursery rhyme.”

Alexa, open Escape the Room.”

Alexa, what are the film times for The Lion King?”

Alexa set a cake timer.”
Give your timer a name—perfect if you have several pots and pans cooking on the stove.

Along with these new Alexa offerings, there’s also some bonus features coming to all Fire TV devices in the UK.

Amazon has just revealed that Alexa Announcements are now automatically enabled on all Fire TV devices.

Once enabled, users can simply press the microphone button on their Alexa Voice Remote and say “Alexa, announce that the movie is starting,” or “Alexa, announce dinner is ready,” and a short chime will play on all other compatible Alexa-enabled devices followed by the message in the announcer’s voice.

Another update comes in the form of the official YouTube app coming to all Fire TV Devices as well.

Customers can now find the new YouTube app tile in their ‘Your Apps and Channels’ row.

The official YouTube app on Fire TV can even be controlled via Alexa voice commands plus, users can play compatible videos in 4K HDR at up to 60 fps on supported TVs and streaming media players.
