Patrick Bamford claims Leeds shut up their doubters with Aston Villa after Gabby Agbonlahor's dig

‘Someone was saying Bielsa was a myth but we showed everyone we’re here to compete’: Patrick Bamford claims Leeds shut up their doubters with win over Aston Villa after Gabby Agbonlahor’s damning comments

  • He aimed a dig at former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor after questioning Bielsa

Patrick Bamford claimed Leeds had silenced their doubters after scoring his first Premier League hat-trick to end Aston Villa’s 100 per cent start to the campaign.

The forward’s second-half treble crowned a spectacular performance from Marcelo Bielsa’s team who moved into third place in the table heading into this weekend’s matches.

Former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor had called Leeds ‘a myth’ earlier this week after they were beaten at home by Wolves and Bamford wasted no time in reminding him of his words.

Bamford was quick to remind former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor of pre-match comments

‘Someone was saying Bielsa was a myth but we showed everyone that Leeds are here to compete,’ said Bamford. ‘We were a bit unlucky to lose to Wolves.

‘Scoring a hat-trick in the Premier League means a lot to me – it’s what you dream of. At the start of my career I was playing two minutes here, five minutes there, but now I have a manager who believes in me, as long as I keep working hard.’

Bamford divided Leeds fans last season after missing a series of good chances in their promotion campaign but he has made a flying start since Leeds went up and now has six league goals.

Despite the criticism, Bielsa has stuck with Bamford, who is now repaying him handsomely. Bielsa said: ‘They were all very good goals, some of the best he has scored. I am very happy for him.

‘He is a player with a lot of qualities and he had creates a lot more chances than he takes. If he continues to improve his efficiency then he will receive greater plaudits.

‘It was a good performance, better in the second half than the first. We had the luck to score the first goal as they had a few chances before we did.’ Bielsa also explained that his decision to take off holding midfielder Pascal Struijk after just 21 minutes was because he feared his player would receive a second yellow card.

Villa missed the chance to start the season with five straight wins for the first time in their history as they failed to get the draw that would have taken them top of the table. Boss Dean Smith added: ‘We knew there was a chance to make history by winning our first five games and we’re disappointed but we came up against a very good team.’
