PFA look to beef up dementia taskforce with England captain Steph Houghton approached

The PFA are looking to beef up their dementia taskforce with England captain Steph Houghton and ex-Scotland defender David Weir among those approached

  • The PFA are considering all the points of Sportsmail’s dementia campaign
  • They have now approached a number of people for their dementia taskforce
  • One person contacted to be involved is Sportsmail columnist Chris Sutton
  • England captain Steph Houghton and David Weir have also been approached

The Professional Footballers’ Association are considering the points of Sportsmail’s dementia campaign, while efforts to set up a taskforce have gathered pace.

On Tuesday, we launched a wide-ranging set of proposals as part of a call on football to tackle its dementia scandal.

We have demanded increased funding for research into dementia and its links to football from the PFA and Football Association and have also called on the PFA to provide respite care for families and carers of former footballers living with the disease.

The campaign also includes a demand for the PFA to appoint a dedicated ‘dementia team’ to work with, promote and financially assist a number of causes and to help fund social events for former players living with dementia and their carers.

The PFA is to set up a taskforce and has approached Sportsmail columnist Chris Sutton, who has spearheaded our campaign, to join.

Dawn Astle, whose father, former West Bromwich Albion striker Jeff, passed away from dementia in 2002 and who has backed the campaign, has also been asked to become part of the group.

Further approaches were made to potential members on Wednesday, including England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton, who is married to former Bradford player Stephen Darby, who has motor neurone disease.

Ex-Everton and Scotland defender David Weir has also been approached as has the PFA’s own assistant chief executive, former Blackburn and QPR player Simon Barker.

Sportsmail has also called on dementia to be recognised as an industrial disease and football’s lawmakers IFAB to immediately ratify temporary concussion replacements. IFAB will discuss the matter next week. The PFA have lobbied for both measures to come into play.
