Phillip Schofield breaks down in tears as he speaks on life-changing moment: 'Here we go!'

Phillip Schofield, 58, announced to the world back in February he was gay in a candid interview with his This Morning co-host and friend of many years, Holly Willoughby, 39. Since then, the popular television presenter has gone on to write a memoir, Life’s What You Make It, which includes his coming out journey and details the reaction he has received from colleagues as well as members of the public. It was one such moment he recalled with Fearne, 39, on her podcast which led the ITV star to start crying.

The father-of-two took himself back to the day after he’d given the television interview with Holly in February and he’d paid a visit to a card shop.

“I knew I had to go out and be this person now. I’m still me and there’s actually no difference whatsoever to the me that walks outside and goes into a shop,” he told Fearne.

“But I was still scared when I did and I went into a card shop and I bought a card. The lady behind the till said, ‘Are you ok?’

“I’d never seen this lady before in my life,” Phillip added, before becoming clearly emotional as his voice began to break.

“This is going to make me cry,” he remarked, before tearfully recalling: “I said, ‘Yeah, I am, I am ok’. She said, ‘Good, that’s the most important thing’.”

It wasn’t just the lady behind the till of the card shop who reacted to Phillip’s news that day as the presenter explained he was approached by another member of the public.

“I walked to the door and a very elegant, elderly lady who was incredibly smart and very smart grabbed my shoulder and I thought, ‘Oh s**t, here we go’,” the presenter began.

“This is the one thing I was terrified about is going to happen in the doorway of a card shop and I thought, ‘She’s going to give me a hard time’.

“This very elegant, sharp lady said, ‘Ah it’s you. Well done’,” the father-of-two continued, before telling Fearne how this woman thanked him as his bravery meant “countless lives” had been saved.

However, Phillip also explained on the Happy Place podcast he is still trying to come to terms with the impact of confirming his sexuality.

“I’m still learning what effects that has on my life and the life of those around me,” the presenter explained.

“Do I know who I am? No. I think if I’m honest, looking you right in the eye now, I’d say I’m still pretty confused.”

The father-of-two said he was “happy” with who he is now, despite his head being “just as muddy as it was before”.

Phillip is still as popular as ever and continues to host This Morning alongside Holly, as well as presenting a new series of The Million Pound Cube.

The seven episodes for the ITV game show were filmed in the midst of the pandemic, with social distancing guidelines adhered to at all times.

Discussing how he would cope taking on the challenges, the presenter said: “The games that would be the complete undoing of me are the ones where you’ve got the metal hoops and the long pole and you are threading through the hoops.

“I don’t have steady hands. There’s no way I’d be able to do that,” he explained.

The Cube continues tonight at 9pm on ITV. Happy Place podcast is available to stream on Spotify.
