Princess Diana heartbreak: Why Princess Diana was 'unsettled' with Prince Charles divorce

Jennie Bond told Channel 5 documentary, ‘Princess Diana, In Her Own Words’, that Diana confided in her after her private secretary resigned following the royal’s 1995 Panorama interview. Ms Bond claims Diana would have preferred to have stayed as separated partners. She explained: “Diana was pretty unsettled with the divorce, she didn’t want the divorce, she told me, “It’s not something I want.

“I think she felt somehow they could continue as separated but partners and parents to the two boys, and she really did try to make it work and she wanted to make it work.

“She found the day of the divorce extremely hard.

“She did go out, she was seen in public, but she was hurting badly.

“She told me that it was an extremely difficult day, but she went home and burst into tears.”

She explained: ‘We would have been the best team in the world.

“I could shake hands until the cows come home and Charles could make serious speeches but it was not to be.”

Divorces in the British royal family were rare for much of the 20th century.

In 1978 when Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon divorced Anthony Armstrong-Jones it was the first divorce of a major royal since 1901.

Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha divorced Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse.

Victoria Melita was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Her father was Alfred, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, second son of Victoria.

She was thus a niece of King Edward VII.

Victoria Melita would remarry Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia in 1905.
