Rep. Ayanna Pressley becomes first ‘Squad’ member to stump for Joe Biden

Rep. Ayanna Pressley will become the first member of “The Squad” to campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, appearing in New Hampshire Thursday for the former vice president.

Pressley (D-Mass.) will make two stops in the granite state, appearing first in Durham for a meet-and-greet with University of New Hampshire students before heading to Portsmouth for a get-out-the-vote event, the state’s Democratic party told local station WMUR.

“At each campaign stop, Pressley will discuss the issues that are at stake for women in the 2020 election, from access to affordable health care, to protecting reproductive rights, to the future of our planet,” representatives for the New Hampshire Democratic party told the station.

“While Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have a plan to make health care more affordable and accessible, to ensure we get closer to full inclusion of and equality for women, and to address climate change, Donald Trump and Republicans have been a disaster for women and families,” it added.

Pressley and her fellow “Squad” members — Reps. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) — did not endorse Biden, a “moderate,” during the 2020 Democratic primary.

Ocasio-Cortez, Omar and Tlaib backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in his presidential effort, while Pressley backed Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the two most progressive primary candidates in the 2020 field.

New Hampshire is the closest thing to a swing state in the otherwise liberal New England region, something both President Trump and the Biden campaign have taken notice of.

The incumbent commander-in-chief hosted a large campaign rally in Londonderry on Sunday in an effort to push the sometimes purple state over the edge in his favor.

“Nine days from now, we are going to win this state. Can you believe nine days?” Trump asked the crowd at an airfield about 14 miles southeast of Manchester. “We’re going to win four more great years in the White House. We’re going to keep it going.”

Trump led the mostly red-clad audience through his closing arguments for a second term as the crowd cheered.

“We’ve gotta end it. We’ve gotta end the fight. We’ve gotta put ’em down,” he told the crowd, “Our country will never be a socialist country.

Biden, meanwhile, has deployed former 2020 rivals like Sanders and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to the state to campaign for him.
