Rocketman is currently playing in cinemas worldwide to the delight of Elton John fans. Musical biopics have had a resurgence, with movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and Respect telling the stories of late-great singers. But Rocketman’s inspiration is still alive and kicking, and his life story was full of local landmarks.
Where was Rocketman filmed?
Rocketman filmed in various UK locations, as well as on sets in studios.
Filming began at Bray Film Studios near Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Rocketman’s star Taron Egerton, who plays a younger Elton John, was spotted in a North London street.
Egerton was with co-star Jamie Bell, who played Bernie Taupin, the singer’s long-term writing collaborator.
The pair were spotted in 1970s-attire carrying big suitcases across the cobbled street.
In one shot Egerton’s Elton is shown getting out of a Land Rover Defender.
In the scene, he wore a pair of pink-tinted glasses and the singer’s original ginger mop.
Other scenes were filmed in the south of England, where Elton John spent his childhood years.
John himself wrote about the filming for the Guardian, claiming some studios “wanted to tone down the sex and drugs so the film would get a PG-13 rating” to which John said: “I just haven’t led a PG-13 rated life.”
He added: “I didn’t want a film packed with drugs and sex, but equally, everyone knows I had quite a lot of both during the 70s and 80s, so there didn’t seem to be much point in making a movie that implied that after every gig, I’d quietly gone back to my hotel room with only a glass of warm milk and the Gideon’s Bible for company.”
Elton John and his husband David Furnish had been trying to produce a biopic since 2001.
In April 2018, Taron Egerton was officially cast to play John himself.
Egerton had in fact worked with Elton John previously when the musician cameoed in the 2017 film Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
Egerton, voicing Johnny the Gorilla in the animated movie Sing, sang Elton John’s song I’m Still Standing.
Rocketman is now playing in cinemas.
