Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is actively laying the groundwork to try to become Senate majority leader, Politico is reporting.

Schumer, currently the minority leader, is recruiting Democratic candidates for Senate seats up in 2020 in an effort to reclaim the majority.

“There’s a real thirst to win in 2020, and I’m getting good vibes,” Schumer said. “There’s going to be a fervor I think for taking back the Senate this election the way there was taking back the House in the last one.”

Politico noted Schumer landed Democratic recruit Mark Kelly in Arizona. But Kelly could still face a primary challenge against Rep. Ruben Gallego, who had talked with Schumer last month. But in other swing states, including Maine and North Carolina, Democrats still do not have a marquee challenger, the website said.

Still, Schumer remains optimistic.

“We’re finding that people are stepping up to the plate,” he explained. “What I tell anybody who I think would be a good candidate (is) that the Senate is a very good job. I don’t try to dissuade them from running for something else.

Politico reported Schumer also is looking to convince ex-fighter pilot Amy McGrath to go up against Sen. Mitch McConnell in Kentucky. McGrath narrowly lost her race against Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., last year. Schumer pitched the idea to run against McConnell during a sit-down with her last month.

And he also is hoping to persuade Stacey Abrams, who lost a tight race for governor, to take on Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga.
