IT’S Shergar Cup weekend at Ascot, which means the usual array of international stars will be taking to the saddle in the unique team event.

With it comes the annual headache for punters who are faced with the uncertainty of backing a rider they’ve never heard of. So here is a brief profile of some of participants.

Girls

Jamie Kah

Leading Australian female jockey who is based in Victoria and has ridden almost 800 career winners to date.

The 23-year-old gained her first Group 1 success in March this year when steering former Andre Fabre-trained runner Harlem to victory in the Australian Cup.

Nanako Fujita

Japanese rider who made history earlier this year when becoming the first female jockey to ride in a Grade 1 race in her home country.

She is also the winning most female rider in Japan and she is able to claim 3lb at Ascot on Saturday.

Europe

Adrie de Vries

At 50-years-old, the Dutch rider is a veteran of the game who is currently plying his trade in Germany.

He has kicked home thousands of winners and his latest Group 1 win came in the German Derby in July last year.

Filip Minarik

Czech-born jockey who has been crowned champion jockey in Germany on four occasions.

He has 14 Group 1 victories to his name and the most high-profile horse he has ridden is Ivanhowe, a four-time winner at the highest level.

Rest Of The World

Vincent Ho

29-year-old who was champion apprentice in Hong Kong in 2011.

He finished fourth in the jockeys’ championship there this year and he has ridden three winners (at Ayr, Hamilton and Musselburgh) since arriving in the UK last month.

Mark Zahra

Aussie jock who has ridden over 1150 winners in his homeland with 13 Group 1’s under his belt.

The 37-year-old struck up a good partnership with top sprinter Santa Ana Lane over the past couple of seasons and his career earnings have recently passed A$60,000,000.

Yuga Kuwada

Leading Japanese jockey who rode four winners on a brief visit to the UK last summer.

He has several top-level wins to his name, including the 2016 Japanese Derby aboard Makahiki, and he currently leads the Japan jockeys’ championship with 96 winners.
