Shocked dad finds out he's won Lottery via Zoom call – but struggles not to swear

When painter and decorator Gary Smith found out he had won £50,000 via a Zoom call from People’s Postcode Lottery he was absolutely over the moon.

The 53-year-old painter and decorator scooped the huge prize after his Bradford postcode was drawn as a big winner.

Winners usually get a knock at their door as seen on the TV adverts – but because of social distancing officials have launched in a new way of breaking the news.

So Gary’s cheque was revealed over video call by People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Danyl Johnson.

Overcome with emotion, Gary reacted as we all probably would on winning – but knew he would have to keep his language in line what with being on live camera.

He said: “That is absolutely smashing! I’m trying to be careful with what I say!!! I’m happy, simply happy. Wooohooo!”

Chuffed Gary plans to use his win to book a holiday combining his passions of music and travel.

He explained: “I love The States. I want to go to Las Vegas and California. I’ll end up at a big rock n roll event in Vegas they have every year. A week of rock n roll in Vegas! The car culture is great there too.

“I like to go away to different places, like Nepal. I just want to enjoy things!

“I’ll probably get myself a new van for work too. It will be nice to get something comfortable I can actually enjoy driving. I’m still frugal though so it will be spent wisely!”

Gary also plans to treat his daughter, who is currently busy working at a care home.

He added: “My daughter wants to take driving lessons, so I’ll help her out. She was really excited for me bless her. She works in a care home so she’s busy working at the moment.

“I did say to her when this is all over that we will need to go out and celebrate. A nice meal out and a few bottles of wine will be very deserved.”

People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play and there are guaranteed winners every day. People play with their chosen postcode and are automatically entered into all draws.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador, Danyl Johnson, said: “A big congratulations to Gary! It was great to virtually meet him and reveal his cheque to him. It sounds like he has a lot of exciting plans to make, I might see if I can go with him!”

A minimum of 32% of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have helped raise more than £500 million to date for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

This draw was promoted on behalf of Royal Voluntary Service which has received more than £11.8million in funding thanks to players, to help older people stay active, healthy and involved in their local community.
