The images uploaded onto Twitter showed the corpse of the Argentine, 28, after his body was recovered from a downed private plane.
It serves as yet another tragic blow to the Sala family.
Just days before the pictures were uploaded, Sala’s dad Horacio, 58, died from a heart attack at his home in Progresso, Santa Fe.
Dorset Police said yesterday: “We are aware that a picture reported to be of Mr Sala’s body has been shared on social media channels and are disgusted somebody did this.
“We are…disgusted somebody did this”
“We are investigating this incident and working with a number of agencies to establish how the picture was taken and who is responsible.”
A source told The Mirror: “One theory is that someone broke into the mortuary and took these pictures.
“The image went up on Twitter but was very quickly taken down.”
Nantes striker Sala had taken a small Piper PA-46 Malibu light plane from the French city to meet up with his soon-to-be Cardiff City teammates on January 21.
As the aircraft passed over the English Channel it disappeared.
Sala’s body was later recovered from the wreckage just north of the island of Guernsey.
His remains were held at Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth, Dorset before a post-mortem was carried out.
An inquest later heard the player died from injuries to his head and torso.
The body of pilot David Ibbotson, 59, has not been recovered.
