South Australian COVID-19 lockdown is so strict, people can’t walk their dogs

An Australian state has banned dog walking, funerals, and outdoor exercise in a strict lockdowns to combat a COVID-19 outbreak.

South Australia on Wednesday declared a six-day lockdown that will keep people largely confined to their homes — with the exception of one family member per household each day who can leave for essential reasons such as for buying groceries, Australian outlet ABC News reported.

“We need this circuit breaker, this community pause,” South Australian Premier Steven Marshall told reporters.

“We are going hard and we are going early. Time is of the essence and we must act swiftly and decisively.”

The new restrictions will shut down schools, universities, cafes and restaurants, in addition to preventing weddings and funerals, the outlet reported.

Sharon Muscet, a funeral director in the state’s capital city of Adelaide, said she was planning a memorial with a grieving family when they learned of the shutdowns.

“They were shocked, once it set in. They became quite angry — there was some anguish towards the government,” she told the outlet.

Under the guidelines, dog-walking and outdoor exercise are also prohibited, the outlet reported.

“We will have concerns if people weren’t able to take their dogs out for daily exercise,” said Carolyn Jones, a spokeswoman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“It’s obviously good for the dog and good for the owner,” she added.

South Australia had not had any known community coronavirus transmission since mid-April until a recent cluster emerged. The state has now documented 36 active COVID-19 cases, which are said to be linked to someone who returned from the UK and spread the virus to a hotel worker while under quarantine there.
