Templegate’s racing tips: Epsom – Top betting preview for ITV’s racing on Friday

MAKE it a Daay to remember in the Investec Oaks.

MEHDAAYIH looked really smart when storming home in the Cheshire Oaks. That’s the same prep race as trainer John Gosden used for Enable two years ago and I’m expecting the same result in today’s fillies’ Classic.

2.00: Stick a Pin on the Godolphin hope in Investec Woodcote Stakes.

PINATUBO made a taking debut when successful at Wolverhampton three weeks ago. Both the placed horses – more than three lengths behind my fancy – have won since so the form looks good.

There’s no reason why racing on turf will cause him any problems and I’d be surprised if he wasn’t up to this sort of class.

Misty Grey took a big step forward from his debut when upped to 6f at Ripon. His seven-length success came from the front and they wouldn’t want to be giving Mark Johnston’s youngster too much rope.

Rayong just got the better of Dragon Command on his debut at Carlisle. He should be suited by today’s extra furlong and he is the other danger.

2.35: GOSSIPING should be the talk of the Investec Mile. This will be his first run at Epsom but he’s got a particularly good record around Goodwood’s twists and turns. He got up close home over 7f at Chester last time out and he’ll enjoy a return to today’s longer trip.

Gary Moore’s ace is still well treated on his best efforts and he does tend to hold his form well in the first half of the season.

History Writer was only beaten half a length in the Whitsun Cup. The strong pace that day set things up for him and this race is not guaranteed to fall so nicely for him.

Firmament bounced back to form when runner-up at York a couple of weeks ago. He does tend to like that track and I’m not convinced this place will be for him.

A wide draw isn’t a total disaster but it’s certainly not going to help Masham Star, Greenside or Hortzadar.

Course winner Arigato could easily reward each-way punters, especially if he settles better than he has been.

Lah Ti Dar should prove her class

3.10: LAH TI DAR should prove her class in the Investec Coronation Cup.

A sister of Too Darn Hot, she was fancied for the Oaks last year before injury forced her to miss the Classic. She lost her unbeaten record when runner-up behind Kew Gardens in the St Leger when he inexperience seemed to count against her.

Considering she was sent off 1-3 for a fillies’ Group 2 a couple of weeks ago it might be considered disappointing to see her only scramble home by a neck. But that race was over 1m2f and is sure to be much better returned to this longer trip.

She also looked likely to improve a fair bit for her comeback run. Kew Gardens was turned overt at odds-on when blown away by eight-length winner Morando.

The soft ground was to blame that day and I’m confident Aidan O’Brien’s hope will be back to his best. If that’s the case he will be a live threat.

Salouen so nearly pinched this race 12 months ago when nailed close home by Cracksman. He had to drop to Listed class to end a long losing run at Ascot last time. His chance to win a Group 1 has probably passed.

Templegate's TV tips

2.00 Epsom – Pinatubo: ‘Made a taking debut and I’d be surprised if he wasn’t up to this sort of class’ (Latest odds)

2.35 Epsom – Gossiping: ‘He’ll enjoy a return to today’s trip and is still well treated on his best efforts’ (Latest odds)

3.10 Epsom – Lah Ti Dar: ‘She looked likely to improve a fair bit for her comeback run’ (Latest odds)

3.45 Epsom – Setting Sail: ‘The drop in distance on better ground should help and I’ve not lost faith in him’ (Latest odds)

4.30 Epsom – Mehdaayih: ‘Scooted clear to win the Cheshire Oaks and she wasn’t stopping at the finish’ (Latest odds)

3.45: This could be a cruise for SETTING SAIL. He looked a smart prospect as a two-year-old but he missed the whole of last season.

It was not hard to be impressed with his return from a year and a half off the track when bolting up at Wolverhampton. The Godolphin ace was way too keen in front over 1m4f at Ascot just 1 days later when that run looked to come too soon.

The drop in distance on better ground should help and I’ve not lost faith in him.

Elector is an obvious danger. He ran well behind some good horses like Wissahickon and Auxerre last season and he hit the target on his first start since being gelded when beating Jazeel a neck at Newmarket’s Guineas Meeting.

They did finish in a bit of a heap and the favourite pulled far too hard but the handicapper has taken that into account.

Borodin needs to prove his stamina and Lorelina might find the ground a bit quick.

4.30: Make it a Meh day in the Investec Oaks. MEHDAAYIH scooted clear to win the Cheshire Oaks three weeks ago.

The pace she showed from the home turn to see off Manuela De Vega was most impressive.

That race was over 1m3f and John Gosden’s filly wasn’t stopping at the finish. It’s hard to think she won’t be just as good – or even better – over today’s extra furlong and she is proven on the faster ground.

Rab Havlin keeps the ride with Frankie Dettori on board stablemate Anapurna. She was equally impressive when bolting up from Tauteke in the Lingfield Oaks Trial but it’s hard to get a grip on how good the form is.

This will also be her first taste of fast ground but that doesn’t worry me too much.

Aidan O’Brien has won this Classic three times in the last four years with Enable the only one to break the sequence. He runs four fillies this year and Pink Dogwood looks the best of the quartet by some way.

As a half-sister of last year’s Irish Derby hero Latrobe she should love the step up to 1m4f and she was well on top at the finish in her prep run at Navan.

I would’ve fancied Manuela De Vega if she hadn’t drawn the dreaded stall one. She met traffic at a crucial time when giving weight away in the Cheshire Oaks on her return and I’m sure she’s decent.
