  • Terry O’Connor has been cleared of wrongdoing following Ritson vs. Vasquez
  • The experienced boxing judge awarded the contest in favour of the Brit by 117-111
  • O’Connor’s controversial wide scoring saw claims that he was on his phone
  • However, the BBBofC has found that he was not on a phone during the fight

Boxing judge Terry O’Connor has been cleared following allegations that he used his phone while scoring Lewis Ritson’s win over Miguel Vasquez last weekend.

O’Connor, a former professional who has judged over 500 bouts, scored the contest 117-111 in favour of the Brit as Ritson clinched the WBA intercontinental lightweight title on a split decision.

Following his wide scoring, there had been growing questions over O’Connor’s judgement of the fight. Ritson’s promotor, Eddie Hearn, alleged that the judge was looking at his phone during the fight.

The Matchroom Boxing chief, who was not at the event, also revealed he felt that Vasquez deserved to win the close contest, with a number of ex-pros and pundits feeling that the veteran Mexican had edged the fight.

The British Board of Boxing Control have investigated the claims made against O’Connor, and cleared the experienced judge of any wrongdoing.

‘British Boxing Board of Control Judge Mr. Terry O’Connor appeared before the Stewards of the Board to discuss his performance at the tournament held on 17th October 2020 at the East of England Showground Arena, Peterborough,’ a statement from the organisation read.

‘Allegations made on social media and the print media as to Mr. O’Connor using a mobile telephone or similar handheld device were considered.

‘Following extensive consideration of footage and Mr. O’Connor’s evidence supplied, the Stewards are satisfied that Mr. O’Connor was not in possession of any telephone or handheld device whilst carrying out his duties as a Judge in the contest between Lewis Ritson and Miguel Vazquez and his scoring of said bout was not affected in any way.

‘In addition, Mr. O’Connor’s scoring of the bout was considered and whilst judging a contest is subjective and following Mr. O’Connor’s explanation of how he scored the bout, the Stewards are satisfied that Mr. O’Connor’s final score reflected his own opinion of the contest.’

This is not the first-time O’Connor has been questioned, having previously been scrutinised for his decision to score the Callum Smith vs John Ryder in favour of the Liverpool man in November.

O’Connor, who turned to officiating after retiring from the sport himself, came under fire once again in 2017 for his scoring during Martin Murray’s triumph over Gabriel Rosado.

Promoter Mick Hennessey said that O’Connor had ‘buckled under pressure’ at the time.
