FINDING new swimwear for your summer holidays needn’t turn into a costume drama. The High Street is full of stylish cossies and two-pieces that have control technology for your tum and waist, as well as slimming mesh panels and contouring fabrics.

CIGDEM TANRIOGLU asked size 16 model Olesya Raspanova, 29, from Hammersmith, West London, for her verdict on this selection of chic but comfy looks, with ratings out of ten.

TIP: Swimsuits with panelling on the sides create the illusion of an hourglass figure, thanks to the contrasting fabric and this style also has a hidden mesh panel to flatten the stomach area
  • Polka-dot swimsuit, £45, Laura Ashley – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “The panelling in the middle doesn’t feel like it’s sucking me in as much as it could, and the colourblock sides aren’t big enough to really create a full illusion of a slimmer frame.

“However, the retro print looks great and it is really comfortable to wear.”

RATING: 5/10

TIP: Fitted with M&S’ own Secret Slimming fabric, this cossie gently holds in problem areas for a streamlined silhouette and the bold floral pattern also helps disguise any lumps and bumps
  • Yellow floral swimsuit, £29.50, M&S – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “I can really feel the support throughout this swimsuit. You can see the difference in my body shape straight away. The little metal bar on the bust draws attention away from any problem areas, which is ideal if you’re body-shy.”

RATING: 9/10

TIP: As well as taking attention away from your lower body, the black section of this one-piece is lined with tummy-controlling mesh, which is designed to make your stomach and waist look smaller
  • Plunge-neck swimsuit, £40, Figleaves – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “The plunge neckline on this helps keep the attention on my chest rather than my lower half. But if you had bigger breasts than me then you’d be struggling as it does lack a bit of support. However, the extra layer in the lining pulls me in around the stomach area, which means it really is working.”

RATING: 7/10

TIP: Wrap styles are great for making your waistline look slimmer and this swimming costume is crafted with a supportive layer which flattens problem areas, creating a much more streamlined figure.
  • Printed wrap swimsuit, £30, Next – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “This one is amazing. The lining feels really tight and secure but not uncomfortable. The wrap style is very flattering along with the V-neckline. This has got to be one of the best fitting swimsuits I’ve worn in a while.”

RATING: 10/10

TIP: The frill detail draws attention to your chest and the bottoms have a built-in control panel, and the ruched detailing around the hips will disguise any lumps and bumps.
  • Yellow bikini top, £18 and bottoms, £18, both M&Co – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “I love this. It looks sweet and I can feel the panel at the front sucking me in. It’s nice to be able to wear a bikini that is cut to flatter.

“The waistband sits in the perfect place to make my waist look smaller, while the frills on top draw attention away from problem areas.”

RATING: 9/10

TIP: Stripes are a great way to elongate your figure, while adding a belt will nip you in at the waist and a tummy-control lining is used throughout this style, which will hold in your curves to create a flattering silhouette.
  • Striped swimsuit, £16, Sainsbury’s – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “This swimsuit ticks all the boxes. It looks so slimming but doesn’t feel restrictive. I can easily move around in this and not worry about being uncomfortable.

“Having a belt and the clashing stripes also really helps create the illusion of an even slimmer waistline. It makes me look and feel great.”

RATING: 8/10

TIP: Ruching across the high-waisted bottoms will flatter the tum, and you can fold down the waistband for a more even tan and the briefs have control lining
  • Blue bikini top, £39 and bottoms, £30, both Seaspray – buy now

OLESYA SAYS: “It’s great that you can adjust the height of the waistband, and having a bikini top with a cup size means it’s easier to get the correct fit for me.

“But I don’t feel like this is the most flattering style on me. It doesn’t feel especially supportive around problem areas but it would still be more effective than your average two-piece.”

RATING: 6/10
