A nurse, in his 40s, suffered a suspected broken arm as he battled to restrain the patient, in his 20s.

The alleged attack happened in a hospital’s closed, low-security psychiatric ward and the medic went for treatment at its A&E unit.

Officers arrested the patient on suspicion of assault and he was taken to a nearby police station before being released under investigation back into the care of mental health authorities.

MP’S SON SECTIONED

He is the son of a well-known politician who has spoken out on law and order issues.

The Sun is not naming the young man, who was sectioned last month under the 1983 Mental Health Act following an episode at his family home.

It is understood police were called to the politician’s address and helped bring the son under control before he was examined by a doctor and sectioned for his safety.

He was admitted to the hospital, where further assessments and treatment were carried out until violence flared at around 11.30pm last Wednesday.

A source said: “There was a disturbance as staff were trying to give him his medication on the ward. A member of staff suffered a broken arm during the struggle to control him.

“It was a distressing incident for all concerned and the police were called.

“The nature of the injury was such that it was felt the police should be called.

“The young man was spoken to and arrested at the scene.”

Police confirmed they had arrested a man on suspicion of assault and that their inquiries were continuing.
