In dramatic photos, a dark cloud hovers over Hull with what looks like a spiral reaching towards the ground.
Eyewitnesses snapped it in various locations across the east of the city.
Christopher Houldridge told Hull Live: “Looks like a twister or something out over the river. Spotted from Cleveland Street.”
Claire Wiles said: “Tornado just spotted. Pulled over just near Marfleet Lane.”
A Twitter user added: “It got large then suddenly shrunk and I saw the top of it swirling. I was driving and couldn’t stop to capture it.
However, the bizarre weather phenomenon is actually a funnel cloud.
They are similar to tornadoes in composition but do not actually touch the ground.
In the US, a “large and dangerous” twister yesterday ripped its way across western Ohio causing widespread damage and injuries.
