Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body can’t produce enough insulin, can’t use insulin, or a mix of both. In diabetes, sugar levels in the blood go up and this can cause complications if left uncontrolled. Having high sugar levels for a period of time can damage your blood vessels and nerves, including the ones that supply your penis, said Diabetes UK.
The site continued: “This can restrict the amount of blood flowing to your sexual organs, so you can lose some sensation.
“This could mean you have difficulty getting aroused, both physically and in how you feel.
“Sex can be an important part of our lives, but it’s something we still struggle to talk about.
“Getting the time and support to talk about sexual problems with a healthcare professional is one of your 15 essential health checks.”

In a study published in Wiley Online Library, high prevalence of erectile dysfunction in type 2 diabetes was investigated.
Erectile dysfunction may be common among men with diabetes, but its prevalence is still debated, noted the study.
It added: “We aimed to assess the relative prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes searching major databases from inception to November 2016 for studies reporting erectile dysfunction in men with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
“The prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes overall was 52.5 percent.
“Erectile dysfunction is common in diabetes, affecting more than half of men with the condition and with a prevalence odd of approximately 3.5 times more than controls.”
The study concluded that screening and appropriate intervention for men with erectile dysfunction is warranted.
Other warning sign of high blood sugar levels include:

- Passing more urine, and going more often
- Increased urination at night
- Increased hunger
- Blurry vision
- Sores or cuts that do not heal
