US Elections 2020: Trump criticises mail-in voting with shocking false claims

Trump criticised states’ decision to habilitate voting via mail, as a preventive measure to allow social distancing. “The Democrats are also trying to rig the election by sending tens of millions of ballots using the China virus as the excuse for allowing people not to go to the polls,” Trump said.

He later added “This will be, in my opinion, the most corrupt election in the history of our country, and we cannot let this happen.”

The president claimed ballots could be stolen, falsified by foreign nations or banned from Republican sections in voting districts.

He also said there is “tremendous evidence of fraud in areas with mail-in ballots.”

CNN has disproved Trump’s theories several times, including the mail-in voter fraud, and his main claim, that voting by mail leads to “massive fraud”.

Bipartisan officials in the US backed postal voting as a safer option to prevent the spread of coronavirus, a view that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also supported.

This week, CNN contacted several Republican senators, including members of the GOP leadership team.

None of them supported Trump’s theories on mail-in voting, and some of them concluded they agreed with its expansion as a way to prevent the spread of the virus.

According to special counsel Robert Mueller, Trump and senior officials of his 2016 campaign allowed Russian intervention in that election.

Trump said: “Like, I live in the White House, and if I can’t get to Florida … you have to go through a process.

“Some people just can’t make it to a polling station, and they have good reason, but they have to go through this process to verify their identity.”

However, mail ballot forging is very unusual, partly thanks to states’ procedures that do not allow forgery, theft and voter fraud.

Many election sites have programs in place to carefully track mail-in ballots.

Ways of verifying the identity of a voter includes contrasting the signature on the ballot to ones on record.
