US state sees 'apocalyptic' surge of coronavirus cases as America battles second outbreaks

If the estimation is to be believed, that new figure would be around 10 times the recorder number.

Officials expect that at least five percent of the United States have contracted the virus.

They believe out of 330 million people, more than 16.5 million people have been infected.

This comes after the US revealed a record daily number of cases despite states continuing to ease the lockdown.

However, Texas has halted plans to reopen its economy following the “massive outbreak.”

Robert Redfield, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suggested that blood samples in the United States reveal large numbers of people have not displayed, or shown minimal symptoms.

He said: “We probably recognised about 10 percent of the outbreak.

“Our best estimate right now is that for every case that we’ve recorded, there actually were 10 other infections.”

Currently, there have been around 2.4 million officially recorded cases.

The New York Times reported in a national tally were 36,880 new US cases on Wednesday.

Medical experts have warned they may be unable to accommodate new intensive care patients if numbers continue to rise.

Dr Peter Hotez of the Baylor College of Medicine, said: “The big metro areas [in Texas] seem to be rising very quickly and some of the models are on the verge of being apocalyptic.”

On Wednesday, Texas reported a daily total of 5,551 new cases.

Initially, the state was praised for their efforts in controlling the virus and were one of the first to start reopening its economy.

However, Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, has halted reopening plans until the spread is stabilised.

Mr Abbott said: “There is a massive outbreak of Covid-19 across the state of Texas today.

“The last thing we want to do as a state is going backwards and close down businesses.

“This temporary pause will help our state corral the spread until we can safely enter the next phase of opening our state for business.”
