The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology announced on Monday that Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental province recorded over 130 earthquakes in the last few days. The people of the Philippines have been warned of the volcano’s activity as the Institute revealed in a statement that Kanlaon Volcano remains on alert level 1. Alert level 1 suggests that the volcano is showing signs of unusual activity.
Xinhua news agency reported the volcano was in “an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest.”
The institute said: “The local Government units and the public are strongly reminded that entry into the 4-km radius permanent danger zone must be strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
“The Phivolcs said that it has recorded 136 volcano-tectonic earthquakes on the western flanks during the 24-hour observation period.”
The institute revealed that four of these earthquakes occurred between 1 a.m. to 2.06am on Monday in La Carlota City and Bago City in Negros Occidental province and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental province.
The statement read: “Activity at the vent consisted of moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose 200 meters before drifting southwest.”
Experts came to the conclusion after the institute emitted sulfur dioxide on June 13.
They also explained the institute had observed ground deformation suggesting a slight deflation of the lower and mid slopes since January 2020.

This comes after Iceland also warned the country’s people of a possible eruption in the area.
Authorities in Grimsvotn revealed that Iceland has been hit with quakes in their thousands and faces the prospect of a volcanic eruption.
Iceland’s meteorological service IMO announced on Monday that 3,000 tremors had taken place on the northern coast of the country.
