WALTER the cat is his owner Hazel Parkyn’s purr-fect hero.

The nine-year-old puss has learned to wake diabetic Hazel when her blood sugar is falling dangerously low, potentially putting her life in danger.

Her faithful pet repeatedly pats her face until she revives. Then he sits with her until her blood sugar returns to normal.

And Walter’s devotion has this week made him The Sun’s Hero Of The Week.

Each week the winner of our award gets a special front page and a £50 reward.

Nine-year-old Walter has not been trained as a medical emergency detection pet — he just does it instinctively.

Hazel, 48, from Swadlincote, Derbys, told us: “Walter is a true hero and I’m very proud of him.

It’s amazing what he does and he’s saved my life many times

“When we first got him from a rescue shelter we called him Wally, as we thought he was a bit of a wally, but he’s proved us wrong.

“He used to be very naughty. He was always up to mischief but now he’s older he seems to be maturing.

“It’s amazing what he does and he’s saved my life many times.

“My fits can be very dangerous and scary and it’s reassuring to know Walter is at my side, looking out for me.

“It costs £29,000 to train a diabetes-alert dog — but Walter does it for free.”

Wally is also one of three contenders for the Hero Cat category at the Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards. The results will be announced in August.

Hazel added: “Wally will be chuffed to bits to be crowned Hero of The Week, I am going to spoil him rotten by using the £50 prize to buy his favourite food — lots of tins of tuna and catnip treats.

“People say a dog is a man’s best friend, but our Walter is flying the flag for cats.”
