EMINEM – despite being one of the biggest rappers in the world – has always kept his personal life under the radar unless he spoke about in his music.
Though fans were always fully aware of his hatred for his dad, who neglected him when he was just a baby, here’s everything we know about Eminem’s father.
Who is Eminem’s dad?
Eminem’s dad was Marshall Bruce Mather Jr.
Marshall married Eminem’s mother Debbie when he was around the age of 22 and she was just 15 years old.
In a handful of his songs through his career, the rapper revealed that he never shared a relationship with his father after he had walked out on the family and subsequently moved to California when Eminem was just a toddler.
And while Debbie and her son started a new life in Detroit, Marshall had moved on with another woman before going on to have two other kids.
As a teenager, Eminem had sent dozens of letters to his father, but supposedly they all came back to him as return to sender, according to Debbie.
It affected the Just Lose It hitmaker greatly, particularly since bullying became a major issue for Eminem at school, which consequently also turned him into a loner.
After his skyrocketing music career, it wasn’t surprising to hear Eminem reveal some of the most painful life experiences he’s had over the years – many involving his family and the hatred he’d built for his father.
The hit single Cleanin’ Out My Closet saw the Michigan native vent with lyrics such as: ‘My fa***t father must’ve had his panties up in a bunch ‘Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye.
“No, I don’t, on second thought, I just f**kin’ wished he would die. I look at Hailie, and I couldn’t picture leavin’ her side.’
In 2001, after Eminem had achieved worldwide success, Marshall made the attempt to reach out to his son through the help of the Mirror.
He told the outlet at the time: “I desperately want to meet my son and tell him that I love him. I’m not interested in his money. I just want to talk to him. I want him to know that I’m here for him if he lets me back into his life.”
Eminem made it known that he was far from interested in getting to know his father – especially after having spent years trying to reach out to him.
How did Eminem’s father die?
Eminem’s father died from an apparent heart attack at the end of June, 2019.
The official date of his death has yet to be revealed, with TMZ confirming that Marshall had passed away near Fort Wayne, India.
Marshall was only 67 at the time of his death.
